The P-I-V-S Model

The P-I-V-S model (Plan-Implement-Verify-Standardize) is based upon the Plan-Do-Check-Act model popularized by Dr. W. Edwards Deming.

P-I-V-S ensures that the services QI provides meet your needs and result in permanent improvement.

Plan

The objective of the plan phase is to identify your specific needs and to create a plan that ensures that your needs are met. These needs may range from a full-scale implementation, such as pursuing ISO 9000 registration, to simply adding a key element to an existing quality system. Some of the activities that might occur as a part of the plan phase, depending upon your specific needs, include:

bullet

Establish clear, measurable goals for the effort

bullet

Perform a gap analysis

bullet

Develop a work breakdown structure (WBS)

bullet

Develop a project plan

bullet

Create a resource plan

bullet

Develop a quality control plan

bullet

Develop a responsibility matrix

Implement

The objective of the implement phase is to execute the plan developed in the plan phase. The quality control plan ensures that if problems or issues arise, corrective action is implemented promptly. Some of the activities that might occur as a part of the implement phase, depending upon your specific needs, include:

bullet

Facilitate implementation team meetings

bullet

Maintain Quality Control during implementation

bullet

Provide training

bullet

Develop a Quality Assurance plan

bullet

Develop and implement a communication plan

bullet

Determine process capability

Verify

The objective of the verify phase is to ensure that the goals of the project, defined in the plan phase, have been met. As a part of the plan phase, specific measures, or metrics, are developed. The verify phase involves collecting data on those metrics and comparing them to the project goals. Some of the activities that might occur as a part of the verify phase, depending upon your specific needs, include:

bullet

Collect and analyze data related to the project goals

bullet

Evaluate the effectiveness of the project solutions

Standardize

The objective of the standardize phase is to ensure that the improvements we have developed become a permanent way of life. After working so hard to improve systems and processes, we do not want to run the risk of reverting back to the previous unsatisfactory performance. Some of the activities that might occur as a part of the standardize phase, depending upon your specific needs, include:

bullet

Standardize changes with flowcharts and procedures

bullet

Develop an internal quality audit process

bullet

Provide training

bullet

Develop a quality improvement plan
